Description
Cut every strip a quilt needs in a few passes, each one exactly the width the pattern calls for. Square the fabric's raw edge with a first cut at the 0 line, then run the rotary cutter through the slits that match your strip width. With slits at every 1/2 inch position across the ruler, there is no measuring and repositioning between strips; the ruler stays put and you simply pick the next slit. Designed by Gudrun Erla, the XL combines the width of the original Stripology with the added height of Stripology Squared, covering yardage cutting and block squaring in one tool.
What's Included
This listing is for the Stripology XL ruler only. Fully illustrated step by step instructions are included, with a printed QR code linking to the how-to video. Fabric, rotary cutter, and mat are not included.
How to Use It
Fold yardage in half lengthwise into four layers and align the bottom fold with the 0 line, raw edge to the left of the 0 slit. Cut through the 0 slit to square the edge, then through the slits matching your strip width, dropping the rotary cutter into the teardrop opening at the base of each slit and cutting upward. Keep both fold lines parallel and the strips open flat with no bend at the fold. Layer several strips under the ruler to subcut them into squares and rectangles in one pass. Black lines square up blocks in whole inches to 12 inches; white lines handle half inch sizes to 12 1/2 inches. The 45 and 60 degree lines cut diamonds and triangles, and the chart in the instructions maps 1/4 inch increment cuts using the dotted offset line beside the 0 slit. For quick reference, 1 1/2 inch cuts are marked with stars and 2 1/2 inch cuts with squares. Lift the ruler from both sides with two hands; twisting a slotted acrylic sheet this size can crack it.
Perfect For Cutting
- Strip sets for jelly roll and log cabin piecing, cut in batches
- Layered strips subcut into squares and rectangles
- Scrap stashes cut down into ready-to-sew strips and squares
- Embroidered block trimming: the ruler flexes over the stitching for an accurate trim
Why You'll Love This Tool
The ruler slides freely into position, then the non-slip surface takes hold under light pressure, so the acrylic stays planted through a long run of cuts. Between the grip and the slits, drift has nowhere to creep in, and the fortieth strip matches the first. Quilters who cut in volume report the difference most: a couple hundred squares for a scrap quilt is an afternoon's work, not a weekend's.
The first session takes some focus. Picking the right slit and keeping the fold lines true is a new habit, and most quilters hit their stride by the second or third project. At 17 3/4 x 22 inches it is also the largest tool in the Stripology family, sized for yardage work on a full-size cutting mat rather than a project bag. Where it earns its place is volume: quilts built on strips, batch cutting, and squaring duty for a whole stack of finished blocks.
