Square blocks up to 12 1/2 inches and cut strips through slits every 1/2 inch with one 14 1/2 x 17 3/4 inch ruler. Black squares from the bottom left corner mark whole-inch block sizes up to 12 inches, and white squares that radiate from the center mark half-inch sizes up to 12 1/2 inches. The slits help hold the block in place while you trim, because it does not rock on its seams.

How to Use It

For a whole-inch size, center the black square of that size on the block, with its left edges past the 0 slit and its right edges past the slit for the size. Line the diagonal and horizontal lines up with the block's seams, cut through the two slits, turn the block 90 degrees (or turn a rotating mat), and cut the other two sides. For a half-inch size, center the white square on the block and follow its edges down to the slits you cut through. The same method fussy cuts a motif: center the square of the size you want over the motif and cut.

For strips, fold the yardage in half lengthwise into four layers, align both folds with a horizontal line, keep the raw edge left of the 0 slit, and cut through the 0 slit and then the slits for your width. Stars mark 1 1/2 inch cuts and squares mark 2 1/2 inch cuts. For 1/4 inch steps, make the first cuts, slide the ruler right to the 1/4 inch dotted line left of the 0 slit, and cut again; the chart in the instructions lists strips from 1 1/4 to 3 3/4 inches. Layer strips to subcut them into squares and rectangles, and cut strip-pieced units along the horizontal lines. The ruler slides on the fabric while you position it; pressing down engages the grip.

Fit and Limits

The slits run from 0 to 12 1/2, so one placement cuts five 2 1/2 inch strips or eight 1 1/2 inch strips; the Stripology XL runs to 20 and cuts more per placement. The Squared has no 60 degree lines and no labeled angle lines for cutting diamonds; the XL cuts 45 and 60 degree diamonds and 60 degree triangles. The smallest black square is 3 inches; for smaller units, the Stripology Squared Mini squares blocks from 2 inches.
