Add a scalloped edge to a quilt with borders from 2 to 12 inches wide. One template carries three scallop sizes and a rounded corner unit. You cut paper copies of the shapes, fit them along the border, mark the edge before quilting, and trim with the template after. Krista Moser designed the tool and the paper method that fits the scallops to a border of any length.

How to Use It

Choose the scallop for your border: Small for borders 2 to 5 inches wide, Medium for 4 to 8 inches, and Large for borders up to 12 inches. Lay four pieces of paper, 4 1/2 x 6 inches, under the rounded corner and cut along the edge to make four corner units. Fold each in half. Cut the edge units the same way along the scallop you chose, starting at the valley and cutting up and off the end of the hill. A large quilt can take dozens. Turn half the stack over for the mirror image.

Press a crease at 45 degrees from the inside corner to the outside corner of each border corner. Pin a paper corner unit on each crease with its fold on the crease. Set an edge unit against each corner unit, hill side into the curve, then fill in along the border. Overlap the units or spread them apart until they fit, from 1/8 inch to 1 inch, and make the same adjustment on the hill side and the valley side. Pin the paper, trace the scallop edge with a fabric marking pen, and remove the edge units. Repeat on all four sides.

Quilt the quilt, then use the template to cut the edge with a rotary cutter. Cut the rounded corners, turn the template to cut down the hill, and turn it over at the valley to cut out and up the next hill. Bind with bias binding. Fit and Limits

The three scallops are 1 1/2, 2, and 2 1/2 inches deep, and each scallop edge of the template is 6 inches long. You fit the scallops to the border with paper units, so the method needs paper, pins, and a fabric marking pen. The template has no QR code: the code is on the instructions sheet. The instructions do not cover binding steps. For rounded corners on a straight border, use the Curved Corner Cutter for a 1 1/2, 2, or 3 inch radius or the Round Up Tool for a 4 or 5 inch radius.
