Description
Cut continuous bias binding strips 2, 2 1/4, or 2 1/2 inches wide with a 2 1/2 x 21 inch ruler that prints the whole folding method on its face. Janice Pope designed it with eight illustrated steps, a yardage chart for each strip width, and an angled end for joining the binding ends.
What's Included
One Bias Binding Simplified ruler. The instructions print on the ruler, with no separate instructions sheet. This listing does not include fabric, rotary cutter, and cutting mat.
How to Use It
Start with a rectangle of fabric. Fold the bottom right corner up so the right side lines up with the top edge, fold the top right corner down over that fold to match the points, then fold down once more, keeping together the edges that the arrow in step 4 points to. Trim 1/8 inch along the folded edges, then cut strips parallel to that first cut. For 2 1/2 inch strips, lay the full width of the ruler on the fabric. For 2 1/4 or 2 inch strips, line up the cut edge of the fabric with the dashed 2 1/4 inch or 2 inch line. Cut along the edge of the ruler.
Sew the strips right sides together with 1/4 inch of each triangle overhanging at each end, press the seams open, then fold the binding in half lengthwise with wrong sides together and press. One end of the ruler has an angled edge and the printed words 1/2 inch Overlap for final join. A QR code on the ruler links to the demonstration video.

Fit and Limits
The ruler cuts three strip widths: 2, 2 1/4, and 2 1/2 inches. Its yardage chart covers fabric 40 inches wide: 1/2 yard gives 255 inches of 2 1/2 inch strips, 270 inches of 2 1/4 inch strips, or 285 inches of 2 inch strips, and 1 yard gives 495, 525, or 555 inches. The inch scale along one edge runs 1 to 20. The printed steps cover cutting, joining, and pressing the strips, and they give no steps for sewing the binding onto the quilt. Curved shapes like those cut with the Curved Corner Cutter, the Round Up Tool, and the Scallop Template all finish with bias binding.
