Description
Cut an 8 inch finished crazy patch block from five templates, one patch from each, so no shape repeats in the block. All five templates fit on one 10 inch square, and you can stack squares to cut several blocks at once. The instructions include a free quilt pattern, Crazy Cakes, at 58 x 74 inches. Karen Montgomery designed the set, and her Crazier Eights Playbook has eight projects for it.
What's Included
Five acrylic templates (A, B, C, D, and E), a six-page illustrated instructions booklet with the Crazy Cakes pattern, and a resealable bag for storage. This listing does not include fabric, rotary cutter, and cutting mat.
How to Use It
Each block takes one patch from each template. Choose five assorted fabrics and cut them right side up. The templates are clear acrylic, so the fabric shows through the grid. Sew A to the left side of B with a 1/4 inch seam, then sew C to the opposite edge of B. Sew D to E. Join the D/E unit to the A/B/C unit. The trimmed template corners help you line up the patches. The block measures 8 1/2 inches with seam allowance, and the instructions give no trimming step.
To cut from 10 inch squares, stack as many as you are comfortable cutting at one time. Mark a point 6 3/4 inches up the left side from the bottom corner and a second point 2 inches up the right side. Lay a long ruler across the two marks and cut the stack into two sections. Cut A, B, and then C from the larger section and D and then E from the smaller. One square yields one block. For mirror image blocks, place the fabrics face down.
Templates A and C also make kite blocks. Dashed guide lines on both templates mark the 2, 3, and 4 inch finished sizes. Place template A on a fabric square with a straight edge on the dashed line for your size and trim the other sides. Cut one C and one C reversed the same way, then sew a C to each side of A. Fit and Limits
The set makes one crazy patch block size, 8 inches finished. The 10 inch square method needs a long ruler and two measured marks for the first cut. The instructions give no strip method. They say templates A and C make kite blocks in four sizes, and the templates print guide lines for three: 2, 3, and 4 inches. The templates carry no QR code: the code is on the instructions. Blocks from the Scrap Crazy 8 Templates finish at the same 8 inches, so blocks from the two sets fit in one quilt. For a 6 inch block, use the Scrap Crazy 6 Templates.
