Description
Five traditional sashiko coaster designs come preprinted on a single length of charcoal grey kofu-tsumugi cloth from Olympus, a yarn-dyed cotton woven with the subtle slub texture of traditional Japanese tsumugi. Sashiko is Japanese hand-stitching rooted in the mending traditions of rural Edo-period Japan, and this cloth pack gathers five small pieces of that tradition on one sheet, ready to stitch.
How It Works
The designs are printed on the cloth in wash-out ink. Stitch over the printed lines, then wash the finished piece and the markings disappear, leaving accurate geometry with no drafting or transferring. The cloth arrives as one uncut 6in x 26.5in sheet: the maker stitches each design, then cuts the pieces apart and sews them into coasters. An instruction insert in English charts the stitching path for each design.
What You'll Need
This is a cloth pack only. Sashiko thread, needle, and thimble are sold separately, and basic sewing supplies finish the coasters. Smartisans carries Olympus sashiko thread in 22-yard skeins, Clover sashiko needles, and sashiko thimbles.
The Designs
The package insert names all five designs. Shippo tsunagi (linked seven treasures) crosses interlocking circles into petal shapes and traditionally stands for harmony and connection. Asanoha (hemp leaf) radiates a six-pointed star from its center, a motif traditionally stitched for healthy growth. Seigaiha (blue ocean waves) layers overlapping arcs for calm and enduring good fortune. Higaki (cypress fence) builds an angular braid from short diagonal runs, and monyo (the Japanese word for pattern) turns a pair of offset squares against each other. Stitched in contrasting thread on the charcoal grey ground, the set reads as a matched collection while every coaster stays distinct.
Finished Use
Each coaster finishes at approximately 4in x 4in, and the five together make a matched set for the table. The same stitched squares also work as mug rugs, patchwork blocks, or small framed pieces, and a finished set makes a personal handmade gift.
