The Designs
C&T names the nine designs Seven Treasures, Bamboo, Interlocking Squares, Wickerwork, Lightning, Key Fret, Pampas Grass, Hemp Leaf, and Seven Treasures Variation. Two carry well-known Japanese names. Shippo-tsunagi (linked seven treasures) is the overlapping-circle design, and it traditionally stands for harmony and connection. Asa-no-ha (hemp leaf) is the six-pointed star, a symbol of healthy growth traditionally stitched for children.
How to Use It
Sashiko is Japanese hand-stitching rooted in the mending traditions of rural Edo-period Japan, worked in running stitch with heavy cotton thread. Place a stencil where you want the design, trace it with a fabric marking pencil, lift the stencil, and stitch along the marks. Each line on the stencil is a row of dashed slots, so the traced marks come out as dashes that show where each stitch and each gap falls. The plastic is see-through, so you can line a stencil up with marks you have already made and repeat a design across a larger area.
Sylvia Pippen's Sashiko Stencils #2 adds nine more designs in the same format, and her Sashiko Handy Pocket Guide covers supplies, marking, and stitching, with 27 designs. Smartisans carries Olympus sashiko thread in 22-yard skeins, sashiko needles, and sashiko thimbles.

Fit and Limits
Each design covers about 3 x 5 inches, so a larger piece takes several placements of the stencil. The stencils mark each design at that one size. C&T rates this set for beginners.
