Description
Two Cranes is a preprinted sashiko cloth by Hitomi Fujita for QH Textiles, a paired crane, or tsuru, design hand-printed in Japan on navy 100% cotton. Sashiko is Japanese hand-stitching rooted in the mending traditions of rural Edo-period Japan.
How It Works
The design is printed on the cloth in water-soluble ink. Stitch over the printed lines with sashiko thread, then wash the finished piece and the printing disappears, leaving only your stitching. The drafting and design transfer are already done, so the geometry comes out accurate from the first stitch.
What You'll Need
This listing is for the preprinted cloth with English instructions. Thread, needle, and thimble are sold separately. Smartisans carries Olympus sashiko thread in 22-yard skeins (white is the classic pairing on navy), Clover sashiko needles, and sashiko thimbles to complete the project.
The Motif
The crane traditionally stands for longevity and good fortune, and a mated pair, faithful for life, for an enduring bond. Here the two birds wheel head to tail around the square, wings spread to the corners, their feathers layered in overlapping scales.
Finished Use
The printed design finishes at approximately 12 inches square, a natural fit for a pillow front, framed panel, or quilt block. The cloth itself is twice that size, leaving generous margin for finishing. The pair motif also makes this a fitting piece to stitch for a wedding or anniversary gift.
