What You'll Need
This is an involved project with several zippers and hardware. Requirements are for one backpack:
- Main fabric (bag body, front compartment, padded straps): 1⅝ yards
- Lining fabric (bag body lining, front compartment, padded straps): 1⅝ yards
- Coordinating fabric (bindings, straps, handle, inner pockets): 1¼ yards
- Contrasting fabric (expanding sleeve, inner gathered pocket): ⅜ yard
- ByAnnie's Soft and Stable (58" wide): 1⅝ yards (one 36in x 58in plus one 18in x 58in)
- Fusible interfacing (stabilizer for pockets): ½ yard (e.g. Shape-Flex Fusible Woven Interfacing)
- Mesh fabric (inner and outer pockets): ½ yard
- Handbag zippers (YKK #4.5): at least 95" of zipper tape and 6 pulls, all from ByAnnie's Zippers by the Yard. Bag closure 35" double-slide, compartment closure 30" double-slide, front pocket 13" single-slide, inner mesh pocket 17" single-slide. One 40" double-slide and two 30" double-slide zippers also work.
- 1" polypropylene strapping (for handle and straps): 3 yards
- 1" hardware: two 1" strap adjusters
- 20mm fold-over elastic (pocket bindings): ¾ yard
- Thread: 50 wt polyester to complement fabrics
- To quilt one large piece, 1¼ yards each of main, lining, and Soft and Stable is sufficient.
