Cut strips, borders, and sashing in 1/8 inch widths across folded yardage, and cut pieces for miniature quilts at full length, with one 8 x 24 inch ruler. Dashed 1 inch, 1/4 inch, and 1/8 inch grid lines keep the fabric edge visible under every line, black diamonds mark the eighths and white diamonds the quarters, and the 24 inch edge spans a folded width of fabric. Lisa Bongean of Primitive Gatherings designed the Itty-Bitty Eights line for her own miniature quilts, where a cut off by a thread shows in a 1/2 inch finished square; the XL brings the same eighth-inch markings to full-length cuts.

How to Use It

Full dashed lines run the length of the ruler at every 1/8 inch across the 8 inch width, alternating black and white so one shows on any fabric. Crosswise, dashed lines fall at each whole inch with 1/8 inch tick marks on them, and the whole inches number 2 to 22 in black diamonds in three columns across the width, so a number is always near the cut. A row of fractions, 1/8, 3/8, 5/8, and 7/8 in black diamonds and 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 in white, sits at both 8 inch ends and again near the 8 and 16 inch lines, so a row is never more than about 8 inches away. Find the fraction in the nearest row and follow its line to the cut. Across the width, whole and half inches from 1/2 through 7 1/2 sit in white diamonds.

To cut strips, fold the yardage selvage to selvage, square the cut end, and set the strip width on the grid with the ruler across the fold; the 24 inch length covers the folded width of 42 to 44 inch fabric in one cut. The ruler slides on the fabric while you position it; pressing down engages the embedded grip.

Fit and Limits

The eighth-inch lines run the length of the ruler. Across the 8 inch width, you read eighths from the fraction rows and the tick marks on the inch lines. The ruler has no 45 degree line, so it does not trim half-square triangles; for that, use the Itty-Bitty Eights 6-Inch Square. At 8 x 24 inches it is the largest ruler in the line; for eighth-inch cuts on small pieces, the Charming Itty-Bitty Eights 5-Inch x 15-Inch Rectangle and the 6 inch square are the small-piece sizes.
