Description
Trim half-square triangles and small blocks to eighth-inch sizes, and cut pieces for miniature quilts in 1/8 inch steps in either direction, with one 6 x 6 inch square. Dashed 1 inch, 1/4 inch, and 1/8 inch grid lines keep the fabric edge visible under every line, black diamonds mark the eighths and white diamonds the quarters, and a 45 degree line runs corner to corner. Lisa Bongean of Primitive Gatherings designed this square and the 3 x 7 inch rectangle for her own miniature quilts, where a cut off by a thread shows in a 1/2 inch finished square.

How to Use It
The 45 degree line divides the square into two halves. Above the line, the full dashed 1/8 inch lines run vertically; below it, they run horizontally. Turn the ruler so the lines run the way the cut needs, and eighths read as full lines in both directions. The whole inches number 1 to 5 in black diamonds along all four sides, so the ruler reads the same from any edge. Two edges carry a row of fractions: 1/8, 3/8, 5/8, and 7/8 in black diamonds, 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 in white. Find the fraction there and follow its line across the ruler to the cut.
To trim a half-square triangle, set the 45 degree line on the diagonal seam, line the unit's size up on the grid, trim the two exposed sides, then turn the unit and trim the other two. The ruler slides on the fabric while you position it; pressing down engages the embedded grip.

Fit and Limits
This square reaches 6 inches, so it trims blocks and units up to 6 inches and none larger. The eighth-inch lines run in one direction on each side of the diagonal, so a cut that needs full eighth lines across its whole length uses the half of the ruler where the lines run that way. For longer cuts in eighths, the Charming Itty-Bitty Eights 5-Inch x 15-Inch Rectangle reaches 15 inches.
