Description

Seventeen different patchwork fruits -- Strawberry, Banana, Pear, Cherries, Peach, Raspberry, Orange, Mango, Watermelon, Plum, Lemon, Grapefruit, Apple, Kiwi, Cantaloupe, Pineapple, and Blueberries -- scattered across a warm cream background in a quilt that looks exactly like a well-stocked produce section. Every fruit has its own distinct shape and color palette, and the large 75" x 75" quilt, with four of each block, is a full farmers' market in patchwork. The cover sample pairs a light linen-toned background with a pink gingham Kitchen Window Wovens backing that's worth the price of admission on its own.

The construction is all conventional patchwork throughout -- no templates, no paper piecing. At Skill Level 4 of 5, seventeen different block types means seventeen different construction sequences to learn. The blocks vary enormously in character: the Blueberries are small and graphic; the Pineapple is tall and architectural; the Watermelon is wide and sliced. That variety is exactly what makes the finished quilt so satisfying to look at.

What the Pattern Includes

This listing is for the printed paper pattern only. Fabric, batting, backing, and notions are not included.

The pattern booklet includes complete instructions for all 17 fruit blocks and both quilt sizes. A fabric guide on Pages 1--2 lists all fabrics and where they appear in the quilt. A free Kona Solids fabric guide for the large quilt is also available as a download on elizabethhartman.com/pages/the-produce-section for quilters working with solids.

  • Small Quilt (38" x 38"): one of each fruit block (17 blocks total)
  • Large Quilt (75" x 75"): four of each fruit block (68 blocks total)

  • Layer Cake owners -- the small quilt uses exactly 36 ten-inch squares
  • Kitchen, dining room, or farmhouse decor -- or any space that celebrates fresh food and color
  • Anyone who wants a quilt with something different to look at in every block
  • Quilters who appreciated Greenhouse and want the fruit equivalent at a larger scale

Why You'll Love This Pattern

Seventeen fruit blocks means the project never gets repetitive. The Lemon and Grapefruit are citrus cross-sections; the Cherries are a pair on a shared stem; the Cantaloupe is a wedge with melon-rind detail. Each block is a small design problem solved with conventional patchwork, and the range of sizes, shapes, and color approaches is broader than almost any other pattern in Elizabeth Hartman's catalog.

The small quilt is one of the strongest arguments for the 10" square format. A single Layer Cake of colorful prints or solids can supply all the fruit fabrics for a 38" x 38" quilt that fits beautifully as a wall hanging, a lap quilt, or a child's quilt. It's also a natural sampler: one block of each fruit, seen together, makes the variety of the pattern immediately apparent.
