Description
The concept here is the whole point: foxes, bunnies, deer, and bears, each proudly holding up a finished patchwork quilt at the guild meeting. The mini quilts they're showing off are all different traditional designs -- log cabins, star blocks, flying geese, hearts, half-square triangles -- pieced in coordinated solid fabrics that match each animal's color family. The orange-palette fox holds a warm yellow quilt; the green-palette bunny holds a teal star; the pink deer holds flying geese in deep blue and teal. Elizabeth Hartman's Show and Tell is a quilt made by quilters, for quilters -- and it is as ambitious as it sounds.
The construction is all conventional patchwork throughout. No templates, no paper piecing. What makes this pattern complex is not the technique but the volume: twelve different animal-and-quilt block combinations, each with its own set of pieces, organized across a large and carefully planned project. Solid or small non-directional fabrics are strongly recommended -- busy prints will compete with the block designs the animals are holding.
What the Pattern Includes
This listing is for the printed paper pattern only. Fabric, batting, backing, and notions are not included.
The pattern booklet includes instructions for three project sizes and four animal types (fox, bunny, deer, and bear), each holding one of twelve different mini quilt designs. Sizes included:
- 24" x 28" Wall Quilt -- single block
- 45" x 57" Small Quilt -- 4 blocks (one of each animal)
- 75" x 85" Large Quilt -- 12 blocks (three of each animal)
The pattern includes detailed cutting charts showing every piece in each block, and full-color diagrams for every construction step. These charts can also be used as a reference for making individual blocks outside the main project.
What You'll Need
This pattern is made primarily with fat quarters and fat eighths. Each animal type uses a coordinated color family for both the animal itself and the mini quilt it's holding.
For the large quilt, fabric requirements are substantial -- 26 fat quarters for the quilt fabrics across all four animal color families, plus animal fabrics, eye and nose fabric, background, backing, and binding. The small quilt uses fat eighths for most quilt fabrics, reducing the total significantly. Full yardage details for all three sizes are on the pattern back.
Background fabric for the sample quilts is Mochi Linen in Natural, a 70% cotton/30% linen blend. Bella Solid in Linen is a usable substitute for quilters who prefer to work entirely in cotton. Background: 2 yards (small) or 3-5/8 yards (large).
A fabric marking tool is required for marking diagonal seams.

Why You'll Love This Pattern
The meta concept -- quilters making a quilt about quilters showing quilts -- is genuinely clever, and it earns its complexity. The twelve different mini quilt designs give the finished piece real visual variety: no two blocks look alike, yet the coordinated color families for each animal type hold the whole thing together. The result looks like a carefully curated sampler, not a jumble.
Because the same conventional patchwork techniques run through every block, the challenge is organizational rather than technical. There is a lot to keep track of: twelve distinct block types, each with its own cutting charts and fabric assignments, across a project that requires sustained attention from start to finish. The pattern addresses this directly with detailed step-by-step diagrams and cutting charts for every block -- the most thorough instructions in Elizabeth Hartman's catalog, reflecting the scale of the project.
The wall quilt size -- a single block at 24" x 28" -- offers a meaningful entry point. Making one block lets a quilter assess the pattern's demands before committing to the full project. Many quilters will find that the bear holding the heart quilt is an irresistible place to start.
