Description
A teal vintage sewing machine takes center stage on this design, its body trimmed with rows of cheerful buttons and round yellow knobs, with red embroidery scissors and a red tomato pincushion arranged in front. Yellow thread curls out one side as if the machine has just finished a seam. Above and across the scene, the phrase that gives the pattern its name reads in mixed script and big color-block letters: "She Believed She could / SEW / she did!" Based on Lori Holt's own quilt pattern of the same name, this cross stitch translates the quilt's celebration of creative women into a different medium. The cover sample is stitched on Lori's 10 count Daisy Vintage Cloth, which gives the finished piece a chunky, hand-made character.

What You'll Need
Beyond the pattern, plan for 10 count Vintage Cloth, 14 count Aida, or 25 count Lugana, the nine floss colors above in either DMC or AuriFloss, a tapestry needle, an embroidery hoop or scroll frame, and good scissors. A needle minder is a nice addition. If you want to match the cover sample, the buttons on the top and sides of the machine are real buttons sewn on after stitching, a few 1/4" buttons across the top and two 1/2" buttons for the side knobs.
Perfect For
- Anyone whose sewing space deserves a piece of art that honors the work that happens there
- Confident beginners ready for a larger project (10 count fabric is friendly to count and forgiving to stitch)
- Stitchers who like Lori Holt's chunky, vintage feel and want a faster finish than higher fabric counts allow
- A handmade gift for the maker friend who lives by "she believed she could, sew she did"
- The wall above a sewing machine, cutting table, or any place creative work happens
Why You'll Love This Pattern
Stitched on 10 count vintage cloth, each stitch is roughly twice the size of a standard 14 count Aida stitch. The chart reads quickly, the work progresses visibly, and accuracy is forgiving in a way that matters when learning. And what the pattern asks of the stitcher is satisfyingly simple: nine colors of full cross stitches, with the teal sewing machine body taking up most of the stitched real estate (which is why DMC 964 and 958 are called out for extra skeins). The machine fills in meditatively, the scissors and pincushion add visual interest, and the lettering ties the message together.
This stitched sampler earns its place in any sewing room. Lori Holt's quilt of the same name found an audience by saying something most makers feel and rarely see expressed: that the act of making matters, and that the doing is its own reward. The cross stitch version says all of that in thread instead of fabric, in a format meant to hang where the making happens.
