Description
Dozens of wooden thread spools fill the quilt, and where the thread would wind on each, a one-of-a-kind scrappy block sits instead: pinwheels, stars, a log cabin, flying geese, tulips, and four-patches among them. Fourteen in all, no two alike, pieced from the bright multicolored scraps that collect beside every sewing machine. Sashing and cornerstones tie them into one busy, cheerful sampler that finishes at a generous 72.5" x 90.5". The blocks also stand on their own, so the same pattern feeds a stack of small projects or one full quilt.
What the Pattern Includes
This listing is for the printed paper pattern only. Fabric, batting, backing, and notions are not included.
The full-color booklet includes the patterns for all fourteen scrappy blocks plus the spool setting that combines them, with cutting and assembly instructions throughout.
What You'll Need
The blocks, cornerstones, and binding all run scrappy, so this is a true stash project: pull from the bright prints already on hand. Beyond the scraps, plan for background, spool, and sashing-and-border yardage, plus backing and batting.
- Spool block background: about 1¾ yards
- Spools: about 2 yards
- Sashing and border: about 2¾ yards
- Scrappy binding: scraps, or about ⅝ yard of a single print
- Backing: about 2⅓ yards of 108" wide fabric, or 5⅝ yards of 44" wide
Full cutting amounts for every fabric are printed on the pattern.
Perfect For
- Quilters with a deep scrap bin or fat-quarter stash ready to put it to work
- Sewists who like a sampler: fourteen different traditional blocks rather than one repeated unit
- Anyone who wants block patterns that double as small standalone projects like pillows, mug rugs, or mini quilts
- A roomy 72.5" x 90.5" finish that suits a throw or a twin-size cover
- Fans of Lori Holt's bright, scrappy, traditional-block style
Why You'll Love This Pattern
Fourteen different blocks mean the sewing never settles into repetition. Each spool is a small, self-contained block to piece and finish, so there is a steady sense of progress rather than forty identical units stacked up before the quilt takes shape. The blocks gathered here are the familiar traditional ones most quilters already enjoy.
Scrappy construction is forgiving and personal. There is no fabric line to track down and no palette to coordinate, and the prints that do not quite match are the whole point. The shared nutmeg spool frame and low-volume background give all that variety a structure, so the finished top reads as deliberate rather than busy for its own sake.
The piecing is conventional patchwork throughout: rotary-cut squares, rectangles, and triangles joined with straight and diagonal seams, with no paper piecing. The Intermediate rating comes from the number of different blocks and the small pieces in some of them, not from any single hard technique. Careful cutting and accurate seam allowances carry the quilt.
