What You'll Need

Scrappy Mountains is a true scrap-buster -- the small pieces required mean the mountain fabrics can come from a working scrap bin and the background from yardage, a fat quarter, or a few coordinating cuts. For visual contrast, Leila Gardunia recommends pairing a consistent very-light or very-dark background fabric with mountain fabrics that contrast both with the background and with each other. Mixing values across blocks (some darker mountains, some lighter) is what makes the finished range read as a landscape rather than a flat row of triangles.

Specific cutting sizes for each foundation are printed on the foundation itself. Standard foundation paper piecing supplies make the work go smoothly: a rotary cutter, a paper-piecing ruler such as an Add-a-Quarter, a small pair of scissors, a glue stick or thin appliqué pins, and a sewing machine set to a shorter stitch length around 1.5mm so the paper tears cleanly away from the finished block.
