What You'll Need

Scrappy HRTs is a true scrap-buster. Each block uses small fabric pieces -- a handful of scraps from the stash for the paper-pieced half, plus a background fabric for the solid half. The background can stay consistent across many blocks (pulled from yardage or a fat quarter) or vary block-to-block for a more scrappy look. Cutting sizes for each section are printed on the foundation itself.

Standard foundation paper piecing supplies make the work go smoothly: a rotary cutter, a paper-piecing ruler such as an Add-a-Quarter, a small pair of scissors, a glue stick or thin appliqué pins, and a sewing machine set to a shorter stitch length around 1.5mm so the paper tears cleanly away from the finished block.
