Description
Everything needed to stitch two navy coasters comes in one Olympus kit: preprinted cloth, sashiko thread, a sashiko needle, and instructions. The designs are igeta (well curb) and kome-zashi (rice stitch), worked in hitomezashi, the one-stitch branch of sashiko, the Japanese hand-stitching tradition rooted in the mending of rural Edo-period Japan.
How It Works
Both coaster fronts arrive with their grids preprinted in wash-out lines. Stitch straight runs over the printing; in hitomezashi the single stitches meet and cross to build the pattern, and a wash at the end rinses the printing away. Olympus sequences the kit as a starter course: the first coaster practices the basic vertical and horizontal stitches, the second adds diagonals. Plan on two to three hours of stitching per coaster. English instructions are included.
What's in the Kit
Olympus No. 4500 cotton sashiko cloth in navy with both designs preprinted, sashiko thread in two colors (aqua and white), a sashiko needle, and instructions. From your own sewing basket: sewing thread and a needle for assembly, scissors, an iron, and a ruler.
The Designs
Igeta, the well curb, repeats frames shaped like the character for a well mouth, its crossed beams stitched first in aqua. Kome-zashi, the rice stitch, scatters six-pointed stitches patterned after the kanji for rice across the second coaster in white. Both build entirely from straight runs on the printed grid.
Finished Use
Following the instructions, each stitched square sews into a coaster about 4 inches square with no lining, so the stitching shows on both sides. The pair sets everyday mugs or teacups, and the complete package makes an easy gift for anyone curious about a first sashiko project.
