The Rob Pete shape is a pointed petal, and the Quiltsmart method builds it with printed interfacing, so there is no curved piecing anywhere in the book. The cover quilt is the classic Rob Pete in red and white, all interlocking petals and rings. From that single shape the book draws ten designs, from a Glorified 9-Patch to Dutch Tulips to a scrappy London Bridge, each one sized from a table runner up to a king.

Rob Pete & Friends is a 48-page full-color book with complete instructions for all ten patterns, the Rob Pete method, fabric and tool guidance, and yardage and cutting charts for every size from table runner to king. It also includes three panels of printed interfacing, one each of the Rob Pete, Circles, and Tulips & Toes shapes, enough to complete one table runner project. Additional interfacing panels for larger quilts are sold separately.
How the Quiltsmart Method Works
The Rob Pete shape has curves, but you never piece a curve. Sew a fabric piece to the printed interfacing on the line, trim, turn it right side out, fuse it to the background, and zigzag the edge. The interfacing carries the curve, so the work is straight sewing and topstitching. One shape, repeated and arranged different ways, is what gives the ten patterns their range.

What You'll Need
Fabric requirements vary by pattern and size, and the book gives full yardage and cutting charts for each, from table runner to king. In general you choose fabrics for the Rob Pete shapes and the background, plus backing, batting, and binding. The three included interfacing panels make one table runner; for a larger quilt in any of the patterns, order additional Quiltsmart interfacing. 100% cotton is recommended, along with the usual quilting kit: rotary cutter, mat, and ruler, an appliqué pressing sheet, and an open-toe foot.
