Description
A bear and a reindeer, each wearing a different festive holiday sweater and plaid pajama pants, lined up on a warm brick-red background that feels like Christmas Eve. Randolph is the bear; Rudy is the deer. Both come in three different colorways, and each wears one of six different sweater designs -- a starburst, a pine tree, a candy cane, a striped pullover, a star, and a snowflake -- pieced in the same colorful Kona Solids and Kitchen Window Wovens plaids as the pants. Elizabeth Hartman's Randolph & Rudy is a 2024 holiday pattern, and the large quilt, with 18 blocks arranged across a deep paprika background, is one of the most genuinely festive quilts in her catalog.
The construction is all conventional patchwork throughout -- no templates, no paper piecing. At Skill Level 4 of 5, the blocks have a large number of small pieces, with two different character constructions (bear and deer) and six different sweater variations to learn. The blocks are part of Elizabeth Hartman's "animals wearing clothes" series, whose body units are designed to be interchangeable across patterns.
What the Pattern Includes
This listing is for the printed paper pattern only. Fabric, batting, backing, and notions are not included.
The pattern booklet includes complete instructions for both Randolph (bear) and Rudy (deer) blocks, all six sweater styles, and both quilt sizes. Detailed cutting charts and full-color diagrams for every construction step are included, along with a complete list of pieces for each block component for easy scrap substitution.
- Small Quilt (39" x 50"): 6 blocks (3 Randolph + 3 Rudy)
- Large Quilt (64" x 73"): 18 blocks (9 Randolph + 9 Rudy)
A PDF supplement, "Flannel Shirts for Randolph & Rudy," is available separately on elizabethhartman.com for making the same blocks in flannel shirts and jeans instead of holiday sweaters -- extending the pattern's use well beyond the holiday season.

Sweater fabrics drive the color variety. The small quilt uses 6 colorful fat eighths for sweaters; the large quilt uses 6 colorful fat quarters plus one warm white fat eighth.

Why You'll Love This Pattern
The combination of two animal types and six sweater styles is what keeps this pattern interesting across 18 blocks. No two blocks in the large quilt are the same: each bear and deer wears a different sweater in a different color, with different plaid pants. The result is a party of distinctly individual characters that reads as a whole from a distance and rewards close examination.
The deep paprika background is doing a lot of work in the cover sample. It gives the quilt a richness that a neutral background couldn't -- the bright sweater colors pop against it in a way that makes the finished quilt feel genuinely celebratory. Kona Paprika is the specific color used, and it's worth seeking out if the cover sample is the target.
The interchangeable body units are worth noting for quilters who make multiple patterns in this series. The Randolph & Rudy bodies can be paired with different outfit instructions, which means the flannel shirt supplement turns this into a year-round pattern, not just a holiday one.
