Piece and quilt a tree skirt at the same time. This Quilt As You Go pattern is printed right on the batting, divided into numbered sections, so the wedge layout is worked out in advance. The cover sample fans festive prints around the tree: green snowflake, gray, red floral, white, and navy dot, bound in red. Choose four to six fabrics and the skirt takes its character from them, modern and bright or classic holiday. Finished size is 40 inches across.

The pattern is printed directly on quilt batting in sixteen numbered wedge sections. A Tree Skirt fabric cutting template is included for cutting the wedges, and it is marked with lines for 2½-inch strips so the wedges can be cut plain or strip-pieced.
How Quilt As You Go Works
The batting is both the pattern and the quilt layer, so piecing and quilting happen at once. Cut the fabric wedges with the included template, attach the backing fabric, then sew the wedges to the printed batting in numbered order. Stitching the fabric down through the batting quilts the skirt as you build it, with no separate quilting step and no lines to mark.
Two Ways to Make the Wedges
The sixteen wedges can be made two ways. The simplest is to cut them from four to six fabrics, following the kit instructions. The template is also lined for 2½-inch strips, so the wedges can be strip-pieced instead: sew a jelly roll or a stack of assorted strips into strip sets, then cut the wedges across them, using the printed lines to keep the seams even. Strip-piecing reads scrappier and puts a jelly roll or precut strips to good use. Both versions sew onto the same printed batting.
What You'll Need
Fabric is not included. For one 40-inch tree skirt:
- Wedge fabrics: 1/2 yard each of four to six fabrics, or one jelly roll (about 36 strips) for the strip-pieced version
- Binding: 2/3 yard
- Backing: 1-1/4 yards
You will also want a rotary cutter and mat to use with the included template, plus a sewing machine and basic supplies.
