Description
This scrappy flower garden gathers four patchwork blooms across a single quilt: buttercups, tulips, daisies, and roses, each built from simple rotary-cut shapes. The cover shows how far the same four blocks can travel, from a cool teal large quilt to a soft, warm baby quilt and a brighter small quilt. Pick fat quarters or precut 10" squares, choose from three finished sizes, and the garden comes together in conventional patchwork.
What the Pattern Includes
This listing is for the printed paper pattern only. Fabric, batting, backing, and notions are not included.
The booklet includes complete instructions for all three finished sizes, the 36" x 44" baby quilt, the 55" x 57" small quilt, and the 68" x 80" large quilt. It also includes:
- Four flower blocks: buttercup, tulip, daisy, and rose
- Detailed cutting directions, including charts that show every piece in each block
- Step-by-step block instructions with both written directions and full-color diagrams
- Fabric guides for two approaches: making the flowers from precut 10" squares, or from fat quarters
What You'll Need
The flower fabrics can come from either precut 10" squares or fat quarters, which makes Posy a flexible stash and scrap project. One of each of the four blocks can be cut from eight 10" squares, the size found in a Layer Cake.
For the baby quilt (36" x 44"):
- Flower fabrics: 8 fat quarters, or 24 precut 10" squares
- Background fabric (such as Bella Unbleached or Dark Teal): 1-1/2 yards
- Backing: 2-1/2 yards; Binding: 3/8 yard; Batting: 40" x 48"
For the small quilt (55" x 57"):
- Flower fabrics: 16 fat quarters, or 48 precut 10" squares
- Background fabric: 2-5/8 yards
- Backing: 3-5/8 yards; Binding: 1/2 yard; Batting: 59" x 61"
For the large quilt (68" x 80"):
- Flower fabrics: 32 fat quarters, or 96 precut 10" squares
- Background fabric: 4-1/4 yards
- Backing: 5 yards; Binding: 3/4 yard; Batting: 72" x 84"
A fabric marking tool is also needed for marking diagonal seams. Fabric should be at least 42" wide.
Perfect For
- Quilters who love a modern floral made entirely from conventional patchwork
- A baby quilt, a throw, or a generous bed-sized quilt, depending on the size chosen
- Stash and scrap users, since the flowers can come from precut 10" squares or fat quarters
- Quilters comfortable with rotary cutting and accurate piecing who enjoy a project with many cheerful, repeatable blocks
- A handmade gift for a new baby, a gardener, or anyone who loves flowers
Why You'll Love This Pattern
The finished quilt reads like a detailed flower garden, but every bloom is built the same way, from rotary-cut squares and rectangles joined with straight and diagonal seams. There is no paper piecing and there are no templates. The work is in the number of pieces and staying organized, not in any single difficult technique.
The same four blocks can look completely different depending on the fabrics chosen. The cover sets a cool, leafy large quilt next to a soft baby quilt in warm pinks and corals and a saturated small quilt, all from the same buttercup, tulip, daisy, and rose blocks. That makes Posy a natural fit for a Layer Cake, a curated palette, or a deep scrap stash.
Posy is rated Skill Level 5 out of 5 by Elizabeth Hartman, her most involved tier. The rating reflects the number of pieces, many of them small, rather than any unusual technique, since the same basic patchwork is used throughout. Three finished sizes keep it flexible, from a quick baby quilt to a full bed-sized garden.
