Description
The little sibling of the Mondo Bag, the Midi works the same printed-grid patchwork at a more everyday scale. Small squares set on point cover a soft shoulder tote about eight inches square and twelve inches tall, big enough for a project, a few books, or the day's errands. The cover samples run scrappy and warm: golds, greens, reds, and oranges on one, a brighter mix of florals and prints on the other. Because the squares carry all the color, a coordinated bundle and a wild scrap pull produce two completely different bags from the same steps.
What's Included
This listing is for the pattern and printed interfacing. It is not a finished bag, and fabric is not included.
The Fun Pack contains two panels of pre-printed fusible interfacing, enough to make two bags, plus printed step-by-step instructions covering cutting, layout, and assembly.
How the Quiltsmart Method Works
The patchwork happens on the interfacing. Fuse fabric squares to the printed fusible grid, fold along the lines, and stitch. The grid keeps the squares aligned and the intersections matched, so the points come out crisp without measuring each seam. It is straight-line machine sewing, with no curved piecing and no templates.
What You'll Need
Amounts below are per bag, and the pack makes two.
- Outer squares and handles: 10 strips of 2½-inch fabric at least 40 inches long, in a variety of prints (jelly rolls work well). 108 squares come from 8 strips; the other 2 strips make the handles, where darker fabrics hold up best. A single 42-count charm pack also makes one bag, and 9 fat quarters make both bags with lining included.
- Bag and handle lining: ¾ yard.
- Fusible fleece is optional, ¾ yard, for a bit more body.
- 100% cotton is recommended. Helpful tools: an appliqué pressing sheet, and a tube-turning tool for the handles.
Perfect For
- Quilters and sewists who want a quick, satisfying project from precut squares, strips, or scraps
- Anyone who wants two finished bags from one pack, to keep and to give
- Charm-pack and fat-quarter users, since one charm pack makes a bag and nine fat quarters make both
- An everyday shoulder tote, a project or class bag, or a personalized gift with photo or fussy-cut squares
Why You'll Love This Pattern
One pack makes two bags. The first goes together as a trial run, and the second comes from muscle memory, which makes the Midi a natural for gifts or for stitching each one in a different color palette. It also tucks inside a Mondo Bag for travel, so the two work as a set.
The printed grid does the fussy part. Squares stay square, points meet, and the finished bag looks more careful than the hour or two it takes. For a confident beginner it is a low-stakes win. For a seasoned quilter it is a fast, scrap-clearing change of pace.
Fabric choice is where it gets fun. The bag reads as a whole rather than a strict repeat, so any square can sit next to any other. Lean scrappy for a livelier look, or pull a coordinated bundle for something calmer. Photos and fussy-cut motifs drop right into the grid when a bag should be a keepsake.
