• Outer squares and handles: 10 strips of 2½-inch fabric at least 40 inches long, in a variety of prints (jelly rolls work well). 108 squares come from 8 strips; the other 2 strips make the handles, where darker fabrics hold up best. A single 42-count charm pack also makes one bag, and 9 fat quarters make both bags with lining included.
• Bag and handle lining: ¾ yard.
• Fusible fleece is optional, ¾ yard, for a bit more body.
• 100% cotton is recommended. Helpful tools: an appliqué pressing sheet, and a tube-turning tool for the handles.
