Description

Five patchwork plants -- Aloe, Jade, Prickly, Flower, and Cactus -- lined up in neutral modern planters on horizontal shelf rows against a clean white background. Elizabeth Hartman's Greenhouse is a plant sampler quilt with a distinctly contemporary feel: the plants are graphic and varied, the palette is flexible (the cover sample uses a full range of greens; the large quilt layout can run the entire color spectrum), and the overall effect reads more like a display shelf than a traditional quilt. This is the revised second edition, published in 2023, which features simplified modern rectangular planters and a fresh new layout.

The construction is all conventional patchwork -- no templates, no paper piecing. Five different plant blocks, each pieced in a distinct design and sewn to a matching planter, create the variety without requiring entirely different construction approaches for each. At Skill Level 4 of 5, this is a sampler-level challenge: more to keep track of than a single repeating block, but built on the same conventional techniques throughout.

What the Pattern Includes

This listing is for the printed paper pattern only. Fabric, batting, backing, and notions are not included.

This is the second edition of Greenhouse (2023). The planters in this edition are modern rectangular shapes -- not the terracotta-style pots from the original 2017 edition. The five plant types are the same as the original (Aloe, Jade, Prickly, Flower, and Cactus), and the block construction has been updated with a simplified planter design and a new layout.

The pattern booklet includes complete instructions for all three quilt sizes. Each plant block measures 6" x 11" and is sewn to a 5" x 6" planter to make a 6" wide x 16" tall finished block. Diagrams and charts showing all pieces for each block are included.

What You'll Need

Plant fabrics work with fat quarters or precut 10" squares (Layer Cakes):

  • Small Quilt (44" x 44"): 6 squares, 10" x 10"
  • Lap Quilt (60" x 74"): 12 fat quarters or 36 squares, 10" x 10"
  • Large Quilt (76" x 91"): 18 fat quarters or 54 squares, 10" x 10"

Solid and non-directional print fabrics are recommended for the plant fabrics. All sizes also need:

  • Plant pot fabric: 1/4 yard (small), 7/8 yard (lap), 1-1/2 yards (large)
  • Background fabric: 1-3/4 yards (small), 3-1/2 yards (lap), 5 yards (large)
  • Shelf fabric: 1/8 yard (small), 3/8 yard (lap), 1/2 yard (large)
  • Backing: 2-7/8 yards (small), 4-5/8 yards (lap), 7-1/8 yards (large)
  • Binding: 1/2 yard (small), 5/8 yard (lap), 3/4 yard (large)
  • Batting: 48" x 48" (small), 64" x 78" (lap), 80" x 95" (large)

A fabric marking tool is also required. See page 2 of the pattern for detailed fabric selection guidance.

Perfect For

  • Quilters comfortable with sampler-level patchwork who want a modern, plant-inspired result
  • Layer Cake and fat quarter collectors -- 10" squares and fat quarters both work for the plant fabrics
  • A statement quilt for a modern home, plant lover's bedroom, or any room that appreciates clean, graphic design
  • Quilters who want to explore a wide color palette -- the large quilt supports running through an entire spectrum of plant colors
  • Anyone who appreciated the original Greenhouse pattern and wants the updated second edition

Why You'll Love This Pattern

Five different plant designs give the quilt genuine variety -- the spiky Prickly, the branching Jade, the rounded Aloe, the tall Cactus, and the blooming Flower each have a distinct silhouette and read differently at any scale. The updated second edition arranges them on horizontal shelf rows with warm brown shelf strips, which gives the quilt a display-case organization that feels intentional and modern.

The plant fabric flexibility is genuinely useful. Because each plant block uses a single 10" square (or a portion of a fat quarter), the color planning is block by block -- every plant can be a different fabric, different color, or different value without any waste. The large quilt's potential to run through a full color spectrum is what the layout diagram on the pattern back demonstrates, and it is a compelling argument for making the largest size.

The second edition has been refined since the 2017 original. The planter design is simpler to piece, the layout is new, and the instructions have the benefit of years of quilters' experience behind them.
