Description
The quilt on the cover tells you everything: a sprawling farmyard sampler on a slate-blue background, filled with horses, cows, chickens, pigs, sheep, goats, bees, sunflowers, and strawberries scattered in lively rows across a generous expanse. Every animal is its own distinct patchwork block, pieced from colorful prints and solids that give each creature real personality -- spotted cow fabric for the cow, fluffy white texture for the sheep, warm golden prints for the sunflowers. The pieced back in bold black and white buffalo check is its own design statement. Elizabeth Hartman's Fab Farm is the kind of project that earns its own dedicated wall.
The construction is entirely conventional patchwork throughout. No templates, no paper piecing. What makes this pattern challenging is the same thing that makes it satisfying: ten different block types, each with its own construction, across a sampler that requires genuine organizational effort to complete well.
What the Pattern Includes
This listing is for the printed paper pattern only. Fabric, batting, backing, and notions are not included.
The pattern booklet includes instructions for both quilt sizes, featuring ten different block types: Horse, Cow, Bee, Goat, Sheep, Chicken, Pig, Short Sunflower, Tall Sunflower, and Strawberry. The small quilt includes one of each block; the large quilt includes four of each. A fabric guide on pages 6--8 lists all fabrics and where each will be used across the project. The pattern also includes cutting charts for each block, usable as a reference while sewing or as a guide for making individual blocks on their own.
What You'll Need
The small quilt is made with 23 fat eighths for the animal and plant fabrics. The large quilt requires 36 colorful fabrics -- 29 fat quarters and 7 fat eighths. Both sizes use print and solid fabrics in combination; a mix of both is strongly recommended for the best results.
Both sizes also need:
- Dark solid detail fabric: 1/8 yard
- Background fabric: 1-3/4 yards (small) or 4-3/4 yards (large)
- Backing: 2-3/4 yards (small) or 4-7/8 yards (large)
- Binding: 3/8 yard (small) or 5/8 yard (large)
- Batting: 42" x 43" (small) or 79" x 81" (large)
A fabric marking tool is also required. Fabric should be at least 42" wide.

- Experienced quilters ready for an ambitious sampler with real visual payoff
- Quilters who enjoy working with a mix of prints and solids across a large, varied project
- A child's room, farmhouse-style space, or any home that appreciates handmade whimsy at scale

- Anyone who has made Elizabeth Hartman's simpler animal patterns and is ready for a more complex project
Why You'll Love This Pattern
Ten different block types means ten different animals and plants to bring to life, and that variety is exactly what makes this quilt worth making. Each block has its own distinct personality -- the sheep is noticeably different from the horse, which is noticeably different from the bee -- and the range keeps the project engaging from start to finish. The large quilt, with four of each block arranged across its 75" x 77" expanse, is one of the most ambitious projects in Elizabeth Hartman's catalog.
The construction is the same conventional patchwork throughout, which means the challenge is organizational rather than technical. Ten block types, each with its own fabric assignments and cutting charts, require careful planning before cutting begins. The fabric guide on pages 6--8 does a lot of the organizational work for you, and the cutting charts for each block keep the sewing process methodical. This is a pattern that rewards a deliberate, step-by-step approach.
The finished quilt has a warmth and liveliness that photographs don't fully capture. The animals are blocky and graphic in the way that patchwork demands, but the mix of prints and solids gives each one texture and depth that elevates them well beyond simple geometric shapes. It is the kind of quilt that draws people in for a closer look.
