Dream Star is a foundation paper pieced design with two layouts: Cosmos sets the blocks against a single background for a clean, graphic look, and Galaxy uses four background shades to build an ombré that glows from light to dark across the quilt. Fussy-cut motifs can be dropped in on point for extra movement, and strategic light-and-dark placement is what makes the secondary patterns appear.

Requirements are listed for each layout; full yardage details are inside the pattern. Both layouts finish at 77 inches square.
- Main fabrics: a variety of darker and lighter colors for contrast (about 1 yard each)
- Background: Cosmos uses one background fabric (about 8 yards); Galaxy uses four background shades from light to dark for the ombré
- Galaxy motif squares: five 9½" squares for fussy-cut on-point motifs
- Backing: about 2½ yards of 108" wide, or 5 yards of 42 to 44" wide
- Binding: about ¾ yard
- Foundation or lightweight letter-sized paper for copying the templates (156 sheets for Cosmos, 130 for Galaxy)
- Coordinating thread (80 wt suggested) and Microtex needles
