Description
Eleven named, distinct patchwork dogs on a bright blue background, bordered at top and bottom by rows of cheerful tennis balls. Tippi the Chihuahua, Cookie the Terrier, Bernadette the Doodle, Pickles the Corgi, Lucky the Frenchie, Ginger the Dachshund, Edgar the Australian Shepherd, Wadsworth the Lab, Buttercup the Pug, Jeff the Beagle, and Clover the German Shepherd are all present and accounted for in Elizabeth Hartman's Dog Park. Each one is a completely different block in a completely different size and pose -- the large quilt looks like an actual dog park, not a grid of repeating shapes.
The construction is entirely conventional patchwork -- no templates, no paper piecing. Eleven different block types at Skill Level 5 of 5 makes this one of Elizabeth Hartman's most ambitious patterns. The dogs are made with Kona Solids and Essex Linen Blends, and the block designs are intentionally kept somewhat ambiguous, giving quilters room to mix and match fabrics to make each dog look more like a specific pup they know.
What the Pattern Includes
This listing is for the printed paper pattern only. Fabric, batting, backing, and notions are not included.
The pattern booklet includes instructions for all 11 dog blocks and four quilt sizes. A detailed fabric chart on pages 2--4 shows exactly which fabrics were used in the sample quilts -- usable to duplicate the samples, as color inspiration, or as a guide for planning your own choices.
Quilt sizes:
- 68" x 86" Large Quilt with Tennis Ball Borders (all 11 dogs)
- 68" x 72" Large Quilt (all 11 dogs, no border)
- 55" x 60" Medium Quilt
- 40" x 50" Small Quilt (Clover, Wadsworth, Jeff, and Buttercup -- 4 dogs)
What You'll Need
Dog fabrics vary by size. The large quilts use 9 fat eighths and 11 fat quarters; the medium uses 6 fat eighths and 8 fat quarters; the small uses 8 fat eighths and 3 fat quarters. Different amounts of each fabric will be used depending on the block -- full details are inside the pattern.
All sizes also need:
- Face detail fabric: 1/8 yard
- Tongue fabric: 1/8 yard
- Background fabric: 1-7/8 yards (small) to 4-5/8 yards (large with borders)
- Backing, binding, and batting sized to each quilt (see pattern back for details)
For the Large Quilt with Tennis Ball Borders only:
- Tennis ball fabric: 5/8 yard
- Tennis ball detail fabric: 1/4 yard
A fabric marking tool is also required.

Why You'll Love This Pattern
Eleven different dogs means eleven completely different block constructions, which is what puts this firmly at Skill Level 5. Unlike patterns built around a single repeating block, Dog Park requires learning each dog from scratch -- and there are real differences between the compact Chihuahua and the sprawling Dachshund, between the sitting Lab and the standing Corgi. That variety is also what makes the finished quilt so rewarding: every section of it is different.
The optional Tennis Ball Borders are one of Elizabeth Hartman's most distinctive design features. The rows of yellow-green tennis balls at the top and bottom of the large quilt turn a beautiful dog sampler into something that looks genuinely designed for a dog park setting. It is a detail that requires extra fabric but earns its place.
The fabric customization note in the pattern is genuinely useful: the block designs are kept intentionally ambiguous enough that a quilter can choose their own fabrics to make a Beagle look more like a specific Beagle, or a Doodle look more like the one asleep on their couch. For gift quilts especially, this flexibility is worth noting.
