Description
Trim 45 degree cuts with the 1/4 inch seam allowance already added, and draw circles from 2 to 22 inches across, with one 3 1/2 x 12 1/2 inch ruler. Two white 45 degree lines cross to form a notch for the corner of the fabric, so you cut half-square triangles, flying geese corners, and binding ends before you sew. A row of holes down the center lets you draw circles with a pin and a marking tool.
What's Included
The Quick Trim and Circle ruler and a two-page illustrated instructions sheet. This listing does not include fabric, rotary cutter, cutting mat, push pin, and marking tool.
How to Use It
For half-square triangles, layer two strips right sides together, each 1/2 inch wider than the finished size, and square the end. Set the white 45 degree lines on the end and the top edge of the strips and cut along the edge of the ruler. For the next cut, set the black 45 degree line on the angled edge of the fabric, with the 3/8 inch base of the ruler on the bottom of the strip, and cut along the short side of the ruler. Sew each pair along its long edge.
For flying geese, lay a square on one end of a rectangle, right sides together with the raw edges even. Set one white 45 degree line on the top of the rectangle and the other on the edge of the square. The black dashed line then runs from corner to corner on the square, and you trim along the edge of the ruler. Stitch the cut edge with a 1/4 inch seam, press the unit open, and repeat with a second square on the other end. For binding, set a white 45 degree line along the edge of the strip with the top of the strip in the notch, and trim. Two strips that you trim this way match right sides together with no dog ears.
To draw a circle, fold the fabric in fourths and mark the center. Turn the ruler over so the grip side faces up. Set the pivot hole at the 12 inch mark on the center mark and push a pin through it into the fabric. Count inch holes from the pin to match the radius, put a marking tool in that hole, and turn the ruler around the pin. Each inch from the pin adds 2 inches to the diameter. For an odd-inch diameter, move the pin to the pivot hole at the 11 1/2 inch mark. The pivot holes step the diameter by 1/4 inch. A QR code on the ruler links to the demonstration video.
Perfect For
- Half-square triangles up to 3 inches finished, from strips up to 3 1/2 inches wide
- Flying geese units up to 3 x 6 inches finished
- Binding strip ends that you trim at 45 degrees
- Circles that you draw from 2 to 22 inches across, in 1/4 inch steps
Fit and Limits
The ruler draws circles from 2 to 22 inches in diameter in 1/4 inch steps. It draws the line and does not cut the circle. It cuts half-square triangles up to 3 inches finished with no waste and flying geese units up to 3 x 6 inches finished. Every angled line is 45 degrees, so the ruler has no 30 or 60 degree lines. The instructions give no cutting sizes for the flying geese square and rectangle. Their heading names mitered border seams, and the steps show binding strips only. For circles up to 46 inches and half-square triangles up to 4 inches, use the Quick Trim and Circle XL. For fabric circles that you cut with a rotary cutter, use Circle Savvy.
