Square up 6 inch finished blocks and half-square triangles with a square laid out for left-handed cutting. It is the mirror image of the 6 1/2 inch square: the whole-inch numbers, the 1/4 inch grip band, and the seam line sit on the left edge, so a left-handed cutter reads the numbers right side up while cutting along the left side of the ruler. The 1 inch grid carries 1/8 inch marks, one 45 degree line runs corner to corner, and the embedded non-slip grip holds the ruler still when you press down. Rachel Cross of Creative Grids designed the square series with its Turn-a-Round numbering, so one ruler reads in whole inches from two edges and in half inches from the other two.

How to Use It

Black numbers in white dots run 1 to 6 along the top and down the left edge, and those edges carry the narrow 1/4 inch grip band and the 1/4 inch dashed seam line: measure from them to cut whole inches. Turn the ruler around and the white numbers in black dots, 1 1/2 to 5 1/2, read from the right and bottom edges, which carry the wider 1/2 inch grip band: measure from these to cut half-inch sizes, which is where a piece that finishes at a whole inch lands after you add the seam allowance. The grid lines are the same; the edge you measure from decides the reading. A second run of both number sets steps down the diagonal. Every grid line and all four outer edges carry 1/8 inch tick marks, with longer ticks at the quarters and halves. A printed hand icon marks the ruler as the left-handed version.

The 45 degree line runs from the top-left corner to the bottom-right corner. Set it on the diagonal seam of a half-square triangle, line the unit's size up on the grid, trim the two exposed sides, then turn the unit and trim the other two. The 1/4 inch dashed line inside the top and left edges is the seam allowance line: set it on a drawn line or a point to trim 1/4 inch beyond it. White horizontal and vertical lines cross at the center with a small circle: center them on an appliqued or embroidered block, or on a motif to fussy cut, and square up around it. The ruler slides on the fabric while you position it; pressing down engages the grip.

Fit and Limits

This ruler squares blocks and units that finish at 6 inches or smaller. Larger blocks need the left-handed 12 1/2 inch square. One diagonal line squares half-square triangles. There are no 30 or 60 degree lines. The eighth-inch marks are tick marks on the grid lines, not full lines across the ruler. The text and numbers print normally; only the layout is mirrored. The right-handed version is the 6-1/2-Inch Square (CGR6).
