Cut the pieces for a double wedding ring quilt, or trim the foundation paper pieced units of a Judy Niemeyer Wedding Ring pattern, with four acrylic templates: Center, Melon, Unit A & B (the arc), and Corner. The ring diagram on three of the templates reads 17 1/4 inches. Judy Niemeyer designed the set to trim the arc, melon, and center units in her Wedding Ring patterns.

What's Included

How to Use It

For a pieced background, sew four 6 inch squares into a four-patch and set the Center Template on it with the solid white crossing lines on the seams. Cut the curve on each side, then trim the fabric at the tip of each corner. Sew the half moon pieces you cut away into melons, set the center line of the Melon Template on the seam, and trim. A quarter-square unit works the same way with the solid black crossing lines on the seams. One 13 inch square, which you cut twice on the diagonal, yields four of its triangles.

For a plain background, one 15 x 42 inch strip yields three center pieces and ten melon pieces, and you can stack strips to cut several layers. Cut each arc from one 11 1/2 x 4 inch rectangle by trimming around the Unit A & B Template, four arcs for each ring. Cut the corner pieces from 3 inch squares in two accent fabrics. Five assembly diagrams show the sewing order, from the corner pieces and arcs through the rows of the finished top.

To trim foundation paper pieced units from one of Judy Niemeyer's Wedding Ring patterns, use the matching template to cut away the excess paper and fabric. Creative Grids says the bore holes mark the seams for accurate piecing. A 45 mm or a 60 mm rotary cutter cuts the curves. A QR code on the Center Template links to the demonstration video.

Fit and Limits

The set cuts one ring size. It is not a pattern: the instructions give cutting steps and assembly diagrams, and they give no yardage, quilt size, or number of rings. The set works alone for a double wedding ring with whole fabric arcs. Trimming paper pieced units needs one of Judy Niemeyer's Wedding Ring patterns, such as Bali Wedding Star or Grandma's Wedding Ring. Her patterns list the acrylic set as a helpful tool, not a requirement. The instructions do not explain the dashed lines or the bore holes.
