Cut wider strips and squares up to 8 1/2 inches straight off the bolt. The 24 1/2 inch length reaches across folded fabric, so one pass cuts a full width-of-fabric strip. The 1 inch grid carries 1/8 inch marks, two black 45 degree lines cross on the 1/4 inch seam line, a white 30/60 degree line sits at one end, and the embedded non-slip grip holds the ruler still when you press down. Rachel Cross of Creative Grids designed the rectangle series with its Turn-a-Round numbering, so one ruler reads in whole inches from two edges and in half inches from the other two.

How to Use It

Black numbers in white dots run 1 to 24 up one long edge and 1 to 8 along one short edge, and those two edges carry the narrow 1/4 inch grip band: measure from them to cut whole inches. Turn the ruler around and the white numbers in black dots, 1/2 to 23 1/2 along the other long edge and 1/2 to 7 1/2 along the other short edge, read from the edges with the wider 1/2 inch grip band: measure from these to cut half-inch sizes, which is where a piece that finishes at a whole inch lands after you add the seam allowance. Extra rows of numbers repeat across the width every few inches along the length, so the reading is close at hand wherever the cut falls. Every grid line and all four outer edges carry 1/8 inch tick marks, with longer ticks at the quarters and halves.

The two black 45 degree lines cross exactly on the 1/4 inch dashed line inside the whole-inch long edge, at the 16 1/4 inch mark of the whole-inch scale. Set the crossing on the point of a flying geese unit or a block set on point and the 1/4 inch seam allowance beyond the point is already there; trim the exposed sides, turn, and trim the rest. The 45 degree line that starts at a corner squares up half-square triangles. A white 45 degree line at the other end gives the same reading from the Turn-a-Round side. The same lines mark lines for cross-hatch quilting. The white 30/60 degree line at one end cuts diamonds and marks diamond cross-hatching. The 1/4 inch dashed line inside the two whole-inch edges is the seam allowance line: set it on a drawn line or a point to trim 1/4 inch beyond it. White horizontal and vertical lines cross at the center with a small circle: center them on a stripe or border print to fussy cut it. The ruler slides on the fabric while you position it; pressing down engages the grip.

Fit and Limits

This ruler cuts strips up to 8 1/2 inches wide. Wider borders need the 12 1/2 inch width in the same length. The eighth-inch marks are tick marks on the grid lines, not full lines across the ruler. There is one 30/60 degree line and no 120 degree line.
