Description

Diamonds open up a whole category of quilt designs, from Lone Star and eight-point stars to bargello runs, but cutting them accurately is where many projects stall. This ruler handles that part. It cuts traditional diamonds, half diamonds, quarter diamonds, and chevrons from fabric strips at a true 45-degree angle, in sizes from 1 inch up to an 8-inch finished diamond. Drilled holes mark the quarter-inch seam intersections so the points line up when you piece.

What's Included

This listing is for the ruler only. Fabric, strips, and cutting supplies are not included.

The ruler comes with fully illustrated step-by-step instructions covering every cut it makes. A QR code printed on the ruler links to a how-to video from Creative Grids.

How to Use It

Cut a fabric strip, then line the ruler's 45-degree edge along the strip and cut to set the angle. Turn the strip, line the cut edge up on the marked 45-degree line at the size you want, and make a second cut to release a diamond. The numbered lines cut diamonds at any size from 1 inch up to 8-1/2 inches, an 8-inch finished diamond. Use the drilled holes to mark the quarter-inch seam intersections before piecing.

The instructions go well past basic diamonds. Strip-piece several fabrics into a set and cut segments for multi-fabric Lone Star diamonds. Cut split diamonds and four-patch diamonds from sewn strips. Make half diamonds and quarter diamonds to turn a diamond into a rectangle or set a block on point. Cut left- and right-slanted diamonds, then trim a quarter inch past each point, to build chevrons. The 45-degree end also miters border corners and marks the intersections for Y-seams.

The ruler doubles as a trim tool. Build a log-cabin block around a diamond center, adding strips round by round, and use the ruler's lines to trim each round back to a clean diamond. Once a block grows past the ruler's 8-1/2 inch edge, the corner angles still line up, so even oversized log-cabin diamonds trim accurately.

This is a 45-degree tool. For 60-degree diamonds, hexagons, and the triangles that build six-point stars, a 60-degree ruler is the right choice instead.

Perfect For Cutting

  • 45-degree diamonds without templates or paper piecing
  • Eight-point stars, bargello, and other diamond designs where the points have to match
  • Whole, half, quarter, and chevron diamonds with a single tool
  • Mitered borders, where the 45-degree end cuts and marks the corners

Why You'll Love This Tool

The non-slip backing is the part quilters notice first. The ruler slides freely while you position it, then grips the moment you press down, so a long 45-degree cut stays put instead of creeping. Black and white markings read clearly on both light and dark fabric, which matters when you are lining a seam up to an angled line.

The drilled holes add precision at the step where diamonds usually go wrong. Marking the quarter-inch intersections before sewing gives every point a target, so the seams meet where they should. The same ruler covers small diamonds and large ones, cuts them from plain or strip-pieced fabric, and even trims log-cabin diamonds round by round, so one tool carries a project from first cut to final block.

It rewards a quilter who is comfortable cutting strips and matching seams. Diamonds are not difficult with the right ruler, but they do ask for accurate cutting and careful pressing. For a true 60-degree diamond or a hexagon, this is not the tool, and the cross-reference below points to the right one.
