Cut borders and blocks up to 12 1/2 inches wide in a length that suits a smaller cutting space. The 1 inch grid carries 1/8 inch marks, black 30, 45, and 60 degree lines fan out from one top corner, white 30, 45, and 60 degree lines fan out from the bottom corner, a dashed 120 degree guide bends from one top corner to the bottom corner below it, and the embedded non-slip grip holds the ruler still when you press down. Rachel Cross of Creative Grids designed the rectangle series with its Turn-a-Round numbering, so one ruler reads in whole inches from two edges and in half inches from the other two.

How to Use It

Black numbers in white dots run 1 to 18 up one long edge and 1 to 12 along one short edge, and those two edges carry the narrow 1/4 inch grip band: measure from them to cut whole inches. Turn the ruler around and the white numbers in black dots, 1/2 to 17 1/2 along the other long edge and 1/2 to 11 1/2 along the other short edge, read from the edges with the wider 1/2 inch grip band: measure from these to cut half-inch sizes, which is where a piece that finishes at a whole inch lands after you add the seam allowance. Extra rows of numbers repeat across the width partway along the length, so the reading is close at hand wherever the cut falls. Every grid line and all four outer edges carry 1/8 inch tick marks, with longer ticks at the quarters and halves.

Black 30, 45, and 60 degree lines start at the top corner on the whole-inch side; set the 45 degree line on the diagonal seam of a half-square triangle or a block set on point, line the size up on the grid, and trim, and use the 30 and 60 degree lines for diamonds. White 30, 45, and 60 degree lines start at the bottom corner for the same cuts from the Turn-a-Round side. A dashed 120 degree guide runs from the top corner to the bottom corner through a vertex on the centering line for 60 degree diamonds and hexagon units. All of the angle lines mark cross-hatch quilting lines. The 1/4 inch dashed line inside the two whole-inch edges is the seam allowance line: set it on a drawn line or a point to trim 1/4 inch beyond it. White horizontal and vertical lines cross at the center with a small circle: center them on a stripe or border print to fussy cut it, or on a block to square it. The ruler slides on the fabric while you position it; pressing down engages the grip.

Fit and Limits

This ruler cuts strips up to 12 1/2 inches wide and 18 1/2 inches long. Width-of-fabric strips need the 24 1/2 inch Big Easy. The eighth-inch marks are tick marks on the grid lines, not full lines across the ruler. The angle lines start at the corners, not at a crossing on the 1/4 inch line like the narrower rectangles. Creative Grids positions this size for quilters in smaller spaces who still cut wide borders and blocks.
