Description

A rectangular flying geese block offered in five different style variations on a single pad -- from traditional centered geese to braided diagonal arrangements and several variations in between. Each finished block is 8 inches long and 4 inches tall, with the geese pointing in one direction to create movement across a quilt. The cover samples show how dramatically the block changes with fabric choice: scrappy multi-fabric mixes for high contrast, two-tone arrangements for a graphic look, or single-fabric blenders for a subtle directional effect.

What's in the Pad

This listing is for the printed foundation paper pad. Fabric, thread, and notions are not included.

The pad includes 50 sheets across 5 different braided flying geese style variations. Each sheet yields one 8-by-4-inch finished block, with the foundation showing 5 numbered piecing sections, sewing order, trim line, and direction to press seams.

The Chatsworth Braided Flying Geese foundation paper is designed to pair with the Chatsworth Quilt Pattern Book by Doug Leko (sold separately at Smartisans). The pattern itself does not require the foundation paper, but Antler Quilt Designs notes the pad is "very helpful" for accurate flying geese piecing.

What You'll Need

The pad is specifically sized for 2.5-inch strips -- a jelly roll provides exactly the right fabric width for the goose and background pieces, with no trimming needed before stitching. Strips, fat quarter cuts, and scraps in the 2.5-inch range all work equally well, whether using a controlled palette or a true scrap pull.

Standard foundation paper piecing supplies make the work go smoothly: a rotary cutter, a paper-piecing ruler such as an Add-a-Quarter, a small pair of scissors, a glue stick or thin appliqué pins, and a sewing machine set to a shorter stitch length around 1.5mm so the lightweight newspaper-weight paper tears cleanly away from the finished block.

Perfect For

  • Quilters working through the Chatsworth Quilt by Doug Leko
  • Anyone who wants accurate flying geese without templates or trimming
  • Jelly roll users and 2.5-inch strip collectors
  • Quilters learning foundation paper piecing on a forgiving 5-piece block
  • Custom projects designed around an 8 by 4 inch finished flying geese block

Why You'll Love These Foundations

Pre-printed foundation paper saves the trouble of feeding thin sheets through a home printer and trying to keep the lines crisp. The newspaper-weight paper in this pad is engineered for foundation piecing -- lightweight enough to tear cleanly along the stitch line without distorting the seams, but firm enough that the printed lines stay sharp during piecing.

Five style variations on one pad means a single quilt can mix configurations across the block layout for visual interest, or repeat one style for a clean, graphic look.

Within the Chatsworth quilt, braided flying geese appear prominently across multiple blocks. The foundation method trades the time and accuracy risk of cutting and piecing individual geese for a more repeatable process.
