Description
The Lone Star is a classic, and the rows of cut-and-pieced diamonds are usually what makes it a someday project. Here the star is built from straight-cut strips fused to eight printed interfacing panels: no diamonds to cut, no points to match, and no inset seams. The cover star glows from the center out, with small diamonds shading from bright yellow through orange, red, and magenta to green and deep navy at the points, all on a soft cream background. Six fabrics in a gradient do most of the visual work, so a run of batiks or ombre prints gives the star its radiating color.
What's Included
This listing is for the pattern and printed interfacing. It is not a finished quilt, and fabric, batting, and backing are not included.
The pack contains easy-to-read instructions, eight panels of Quiltsmart 58-inch Lone Star interfacing, and a design page. Eight panels make one 58-inch star, which becomes a lap, twin, or queen quilt depending on the border width.
How the Quiltsmart Method Works
The printed interfacing turns the hardest part of a Lone Star into a fuse-and-sew process. Fuse the cut fabric rectangles onto the printed grid, then sew on the printed lines to join them. Fold and sew on the next lines to build the diamond rows, then add the background triangles and corners. Because the seam lines are printed and aligned, the points meet and the intersections match without measuring or easing. The finished quilt has the look of a pieced Lone Star, made from straight strips instead of cut diamonds and set-in seams.
What You'll Need
Beyond the included interfacing and instructions, plan for:
- Six coordinating fabrics for the star, 3/4 yard each. A light-to-dark gradient, batiks, or an ombre run gives the radiating effect shown on the cover.
- 2 yards for the star background.
- Border fabric, which can match the background: 1 yard (optional) for the lap, 2-1/2 yards for the twin, 6 yards for the queen.
- Backing, batting, and binding for your size. The pack's yardage chart lists the amounts, such as 4 yards of backing and 72" x 72" batting for the lap.
- Helpful tools: an applique pressing sheet, a size 60 machine needle, and a rotary cutter, mat, and ruler.
Yardages are based on 40-inch-wide fabric.
Perfect For
- Quilters who love the look of a Lone Star but would rather skip cutting and matching rows of diamonds
- Confident beginners ready for an impressive quilt with a forgiving, printed-line method
- Anyone drawn to a bold gradient star in batiks, ombres, or a six-fabric color run
- Makers who want one pattern that scales from a lap throw to a queen bed quilt
Why You'll Love This Pattern
The diamonds are the usual reason a Lone Star stalls. Here the points and the intersections come from the printed lines, so the star goes together quickly and the eight points stay sharp. The cutting is straight strips, with no angles and no set-in seams to ease around.
The six-fabric gradient is where the personality lives. A bright-to-deep run reads like the glowing cover star. A calmer set of low-volume prints, a single ombre, or a controlled two-color scheme reads like a completely different quilt from the same pattern.
One pack covers three sizes. Eight panels make the 58-inch star, and the border width is what turns it into a lap, twin, or queen. The same center can finish as a 58-inch throw or grow to a 90 by 97 inch bed quilt.
